AFRICAN CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY FORUM (ACSF)
A PROGRAMME OF THE AICC
***********************************
WHY THIS FORUM?
ACSF promotes long-term economic growth that not only makes good business sense, but also maximizes benefits to governments, communities, and the environment.
Addressing and resolving corporate sustainability issues is critical in ensuring that sustainable economic growth is achieved in a manner that not only makes good business sense but maximises benefit to governments and society as a whole. And as corporate sustainability issues continue to push towards the forefront of many African and International agendas, it has become imperative that Africa creates a strong platform to voice it’s own issues and concerns. The Forum facilitates the African perspective, giving insights into local challenges and solutions of key stakeholders; it ensures that developing agendas are truly representative of the underlying issues.
WHO WE ARE
As an internationally recognised centre of excellence in corporate sustainability, AICC (a leading African not-for-profit organisation, established in 2001) is committed to strengthening responsible growth and competitiveness on the continent, through research, advocacy and network building. Driving responsible economic growth and competitiveness in Africa
It is clearly acknowledged that businesses, acting responsibly, have a clear role to play in driving sustainable economic growth and competitiveness in Africa. However, the solutions required to achieve this are often too complex and the resources too thinly spread across the various sectors for business to do it alone. In driving corporate sustainability as a key catalyst for economic growth and competition, the African Corporate Sustainability Forum (ACSF) acts as the needed multi-stakeholder platform.
The Africa Corporate Sustainability Forum – a programme area of the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) – is an international multi-stakeholder
platform which facilitates actionable learning through creating an opportunity for companies, organizations, and the broader civil society to share relevant experiences, and contribute to creating tangible solutions to the complex developmental challenges facing the continent.
I. Being a strong basis for multi-sector partnership formation in order to address some of the key development challenges facing the continent;
II. Facilitating the identification and harnessing of innovations, networks and problem solving skills that provide competitive sustainability advantage for members and for the countries and regions in which they operate;
III. Facilitating knowledge exchange and research dissemination across the region and internationally;
IV. Clearly demonstrating and ensuring the understanding of the business case for corporate sustainability in Africa;
V. Building the capacity of nationally-based African organisations involved in promoting corporate sustainability; and
VI. Providing, where necessary, opportunities for training and skills development on corporate sustainability and other related themes.
Many private and public sector enterprises are recognising that to do business in Africa successfully, they have to address corporate sustainability actively as a business imperative. Apart from the social and environmental risks inherent with operating on the continent, integrating responsible business practice throughout a company's activities is also pertinent in order to develop market opportunities in a way that reflects societal needs.
The ACSF promotes the principles of the UN Global Compact.
* Operating with good corporate governance practice that upholds the highest standard in assessing non-financial risks and opportunities;
* Being transparent and engaging in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders as to the economic, social and environmental impacts of their business activities;
* Encouraging the integration, management and measurement of responsible business practice across the full range of a company’s business activities;
* Striving for continuous improvement in responsible business practice;
* Through partnership and individual company action, supporting a proactive approach to all social and environmental challenges;
* Providing employees with safe and healthy work conditions, the elimination of discriminatory work practices and the adherence to basic human rights;
* Inspiring and leading on corporate responsibility in Africa;
* and Achieving good return on investment while still fulfilling these principles.
ACSF Events in Malawi:
In June, 2005, the ACSF successfully hosted 3 key events in cooperation with the Malawi Global Compact Network, the Reserve Bank of Malawi and AICC’s Centre for
Sustainability Investing. The events were designed to bring business leaders, the public sector and civil society groups together to join forces against corruption, seek ways to provide banking services to the ‘unbanked’, and develop a strategy for improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector.
