Dear Peter,
I really do appreciate what you have done by putting up a warning to people on the 419 scams
Its is such a disappointment that Nigeria has been given such a bad image in the eys of the world but our government is doing a great work at combating it.
I must say that the victims of this poeple must also be blamed for involving themselves in such a clear act of folishness.
Why should I want to get involved in a business opportunity without conducting proper due diligence. Please I offer my email address, any one that sees any supicious mail and is not sure of what the content is trying to say or they want to be sure of the validity of the information I can help them with due diligence free of charge. I want this stupidity to stop. I want to do all i can do to help it stop as a Nigerian.
People out there should be careful, I too recieve this mails too in my mail box i never even bother to read them once I see the first paragrah.
The only way 419 can be stoped is if people co-operate, Victims Stop encouraging this people and mind you Peter, the world must know that even people from other countries do 419 and the world still blames Nigerians. Just the other day a friend of mine who is Nigeria was almost duped by a foriegn person in Europe claiming that my friend has won the total amount of 4,000,000 Euro in a Lottery and he has to pay about 4,000 Euro before he can claim it. Why should I pay money to receive money, when u can deduct that said amount from the money you claim I won. It is all abount proper reasoning sir.
Thank you very much for the advert you are putting on your website for people to see what a 419 mail sounds like and know what to do. We will join you in this fight. as Innocent people lost there life savings and at times even there lives because of lack of proper information. Also governments all over should start encouraging the posditive sides of the Internet.
Thank you peter for what you are doing, its a great job do keep it up.

Hi Peter,
I always appreciate your news updates but most of the events are always in the JHB area, how do we get some events staged in CT (CapeTown).
I am particularly interested in your 419 information and I am wondering if you could perhaps facilitate and exchange of information.
Some four or five years ago I did an investigation on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and I am currently still working with Scotland Yard on further investigation as it seemed to have raised its ugly head again.
I would appreciate any info please.
Kindest Regards.

Dear Peter
This thing will not end, at least not in the next few years.
The way I see it, as long as people remain greedy, hoping to reap where they did not sow and hoping to get rich quick without thought for integrity, then these fraudsters will smile home from time to time.
We must use this platform to enlighten people, especially those based in Europe and America because they are the major targets. Africa was impoverished in time past through such phony deals, but today, the process has been hijacked by youngsters who use the same tactics to lure unsuspecting victims with aview to defrauding them of hard earned money.
Remove greed from men, and the fight will succeed.

Dear Peter,
Thanks for the info. My first reaction to this would be (and I'm probably wrong here): If any one is stupid/greedy enough to be caught out by a 419 scheme then he deserves to loose a few thousand rand. 419 scam e-mails are one of the reasons Outlook Express has a 'delete' button.
Have a great day!

Thanks Peter for the information but you can rest assured that I won't fall for any of these scams. I have started getting their e-mails lately. I usually send back insulting responses. I hope that they don't send somebody to kill me!

Hi Peter.
Thanks for the info. There are also some pretty "hokie" Lottery scams that try to back door into getting banking details or scamming peole directly for money (catch 2nd to last para. beginning with "Note:...". They vary from many parts of the world, primarily European to make people think they are credible. I recieve two, they were very similar but from different countries.
Here is a sample:

HI Peter, thanks for the heads up, I have received a new mail and this is how it starts.
I see that your list does not have this guys name so possibly you should add it to your list.
I corresponded with him and he appears very genuine. He contacts you directly and legitimately from overseas.
I unfortunately do not know what his game is, but better safe than sorry.
Cheers

Peter,
Your warning is timely.
As a former SA foreign service officer, it beats me that so many otherwise sensible people can be so stupid - probably driven by greed - to fall for these solicitations. We even at one stage had to deny visas to Uzbek citizens who wanted to come to SA attracted by these scam letters. And we had to explain to the Uzbekistan government why we were refusing to let their citizens visit SA - in their own best interests.
Recently I have seen a letter claiming to come from Susan Shabangu, Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy Affairs, but providing offshore contact details. Also on an Anglo American "letterhead". I even saw one once addressed to the Chairman of SA's then Atomic Energy Corporation! The cheek of the perpetrators has no limits.
As many of these scam letters originate in SA, the SAPS has a dedicated unit to deal with them. The Consular Section of the Dept of Foreign Affairs also handles complaints, many received from foreign businessmen by our diplomatic and consular missions abroad, about these scam letters received purportedly from SA.
I note, however, that the addresses you provide are in the US. If you wish, I can get the local contact addresses and details and pass them to you.
The one I have already is consular@foreign.gov.za
Regards.

Hurray Peter:
I too get inundated with this nonsense. It's hard enough to get US investors/firms interested in our African JV's to have to compete with this fraud.
All the best.
