WHO OR WHAT IS COMMISSION FOR AFRICA

THE COMMISSION ON AFRICA
The Commission for Africa, is an independent international commission set up by the United Kingdom (Tony BLAIR) to take a fresh look at how the international community can do more to support Africa's development.
The Commissioners were carefully chosen and are working in a personal capacity, not as representatives of States or on account of their State of origin. Although the Commission was initiated by the UK, it is an international body. There are 17 Commissioners - nine from Africa:
· Prime Minister Tony Blair, United Kingdom (Chair)
The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, launched the Commission on 26 February and will lead it. The first meeting of the Commission was in London on 4 May. The Commissioners agreed the broad allocation of work among them. There was a second Commission meeting in October in Addis Ababa, which will be followed by a third meeting. The Commission will publish its report in spring 2005, in good time before the G8 Summit.
The Commission report will aim to be comprehensive. It will not hesitate to address difficult questions. Its recommendations may mean difficult choices for the international community and for Africa.
The Commission has identified six principle themes: Human development (health, especially AIDS and education); tackling Peace and security; Natural resources (including environment); Governance; the Economy (including development finance, economic growth and trade), and Culture and participation. On Friday, 05 November 2004, I attended a workshop organised by the Commonwealth Business Council on behalf of The Commission for Africa - the objective of this workshop was:

· Michel Camdessus, French G8 Africa Personal Representative
· Bob Geldof, Ireland, musician and African development activist
· Ralph Goodale, PC MP Finance Minister of Canada
· Dr William Kalema, Chairman, Uganda Investment Authority
· Trevor Manuel, Finance Minister of South Africa
· President Benjamin Mkapa, Tanzania
· Linah Mohohlo, Governor of Botswana Central Bank
· Ji Peiding, Member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee - China
· Tidjane Thiam, Côte d'Ivoirean businessman and former Minister
· Dr Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, Executive Director of the UN Centre for Human Settlements
· Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia

· To generate new ideas and action for a strong and prosperous Africa, using the 2005 British presidencies of the G8 and the European Union as a platform;
· To support the best of existing work on Africa, in particular the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and the African Union, and help ensure this work achieves its goals;
· To help deliver implementation of existing international commitments towards Africa;
· To offer a fresh and positive perspective for Africa and its diverse culture in the 21st century, which challenges unfair perceptions and helps deliver changes; and
· To understand and help fulfill African aspirations for the future by listening to Africans.
