TRADING WITH AFRICA - TRADING WITH EACH OTHER

A few months ago I went to a meeting about the alleviation and reduction of poverty. We had the normal non-govrnmental organisations and of course the office of the world food programme.

Among the invited guests we had a lecturer from our university who had been invited to present a paper. He started with his presentation and he mentioned that what he was about to say would shock us. He said that there was profit in poverty a lot of the people present almost ate him alive .

It was only after he explained what he meant that they understood.

This then comes to the notion that as long as Africa stays poor and our resources are being raped we should never become self sufficient in food and economically.

Africa is a huge market that is there for the taking.

Why is China so keen to colonise us is it not for our resources .

As long as we are poor and keep on fighting our wars we will always play into the hands of the so called chess grandmasters. We are saying to the rest of the world open up your markets so we can sell to you what about the markets right here in Africa that we have not satisfied. We as Africans all looking at these world markets instead of first trading with each other and then looking outside.

I feel very depressed that I have a very powerful neighbour Mozambique but our trade is non-existant.

Our manufacturing capacity as Africans is very poor we want ready made goods because we have been brainwashed that we are not capable manufacturing our own goods.

The price of fuel goes up all the time how are we expected to feed ourselves let alone trade when you have the rug pulled from under your feet everytime you think you are getting out of the bushes.

I beilive that South Africa is not doing enough for the SACU countries in terms of trade.

We should be having a lot of South African companies having factories and bringing much needed employment and skills - not slave wages.

It is imperative that South Africa realises that they are now recognised as the leaders in Africa in terms of economic growth and politically. As such they should not forget us because as they prosper and we get left behind it negates negatively on them.

I hope we as Africans can trade with each other first before we look yonder.
