SABC TELETHON FOR TSUNAMI DISASTER

The SABC is calling on all decision-makers to contribute towards the Tsunami Disaster Fund drive. A special VIP Telethon will be broadcast on SABC2’s Morning Live and SABC Africa programmes on Tuesday, 11 January in aid of the Tsunami Disaster.

The Telethon which is aimed at decision-makers was done to give Government and Business the opportunity to participate publicly in the fund drive that has been set up for aid towards Tsunami survivors. To date almost R2 million has been received by the Welcome Msomi Gateway/SABC fund from the general public. This includes money that was received via SMS-messages.

Various (South African) Government representatives such as Premiers, Mayors and Ministries will be challenged to donate money to the SA Red Cross Society. Parallel to this, SABC Executive members will be challenging business partners, broadcast competitors and other big business to donate to the Red Cross.

§ Parastatals such as Eskom, the Post office, Transnet and Postnet will battle against each other to bring in funds.

§ MEC's, DG's and the Government Communications Department will also challenge each other.
