A 'SPECIAL PROJECT' SERVING AFRICA

A VELD WALL

.. a vertical grassland along the Keyes Art Mile!

In the good old days (that is, before serious human intervention) Rosebank (Johannesburg, South Africa) was a waving grassland what is known today as Egoli Grassland, with game aplenty. Today it is a concrete jungle, admittedly with very interesting and unique shops.

But no more. Grass is back in Rosebank!

The developer of Keyes Art Mile, Anton Taljaard, had the vision to create a vertical grassland along the Keyes Art Mile. For those not familiar with the area, it is next to Everard Read Gallery and behind Circa Art Gallery.

Wildflower Wholesale Nursery was requested by the landscape architect, Charldon Wilken, to assist in identifying suitable plants and also grow them for this project. This was done in cooperation with the contractor for the project, Oscar Lockwood from Life Landscapes.

"We love challenges. The first one was to identify suitable plants. Bag size was limited to 3 litres and plants with tap roots had to be excluded as well as plants that can become weedy. In the veld plants grow in micro habitats with different soil types and water requirements and the challenge now was to standardize it" explains Johan Wentzel (PhD) Co-Founder of Wildflower Wholesale Nursery

The project required a lot of sweat and a steep learning curve for the professional team. To complicate matters, the developer, very familiar with plants that occur in the Egoli Grassland, prohibited any other grassland beauties onto the palette.

What the team did learn from this project was that a correct plant mix is crucial. Enough grasses should be included to create the grassland look, but also perennials, ground covers and bulbs to add structure, colour and biodiversity!

"The maintenance of this grassland veld wall is crucial. Unlike many created landscapes, this one is not evergreen, because most of the Egoli grassland plants go dormant in winter - they do not die, they just go into a winter sleep" Wentzel adds.

To the team this is all part of the charm, but a serious challenge from a maintenance and management perspective. Birds and butterflies are visiting the wall and the team trusts that some of them will become permanent residents.
