A 'SPECIAL PROJECT' SERVING AFRICA

THE CHALLENGE OF HUMAN SANITATION
AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

******************************

A big contributor to the pollution problem in Africa is the inadequate or non-disposal of human excreta. This directly causes many people to die every year from sewage-related water-borne diseases throughout the continent. Unsatisfactory sanitation leads to frequent outbreaks of dysentery, typhoid, cholera, gastro-enteritis parasites (e.g. worms, lice), conjunctivitis (eye infections), and diarrhoea, resulting in high infant mortality rates and numerous people being hospitalised. These costs of treatment are essentially unnecessary, and they put an enormous financial strain on the Health Departments.

Water-borne sewerage reticulation systems in Africa will never be practical other than in major cities. Thus the majority of people have to use pit latrines or a combination of a septic tank & french drain system, which is a pollutant to the aquifer. Because of the very nature of pit latrines i.e. they become infested with flies, they stink, etc. The population is therefore much more inclined to use the outdoors - thus you have the beginnings of water-borne diseases such as cholera occurring repetitively throughout the country after the rainy season.

The solution to this problem is the application of a specifically developed bio-enzyme “cocktail” that is designed to accelerate the dissolution of the raw faecal matter, producing pure water and carbon dioxide, with a resultant immediate and beneficial environmental effect.

The bio-enzymes are a completely natural and safe-to-use product which accelerate the breakdown of organic waste, resulting in:–

· a substantial reduction of solids build-up
· a conversion of the faecal sludge to a soluble liquid slurry
· an improvement in soluble solid and BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) levels
· an increased treatment capacity for the system without additional capital outlay
· a reduction in ammonia generation
· elimination of “bad smells”
· strong competition against E. Coli. for nutrients, consequently
· decreasing coliform counts
· a substantial improvement in effluent quality.

Bearing in mind that sewage disposal is the Constitutional responsibility of Government (i.e. local authorities) to provide a clean environment for people to live in, it is clear that bio-enzyme treatment is the only proper and cost-effective way to go. The new Water Act, in South Africa, requires that NO pollution of the groundwater is allowed – BUT all 4 million pits and septic tank / french drain combos also do exactly this!!

The promoters have developed the concept of effluent treatment, and developed the enzyme “cocktail” to the stage where they are now seeking a further capital injection to finalise the field testwork prior to full commercialisation. The implementation of this proposal has huge potential for the permanent employment of upwards of 4 000 women in rural communities, who are in any case primarily responsible for the sanitation of their own households and informal communities. This will start to solve the rural sanitation needs of most of the population.

This project offers an opportunity for investors who may be interested in joining us in progressing this project, the promoters welcome investors to the penultimate stage prior to full commercialisation of the project.
