THE WAD LINEN SHOPPING BAG PROJECT
Environmentally-friendly Linen Shopping Bag Project

Environmentally-friendly Linen Shopping Bag Project
This project was established during 1996 in moving towards a cleaner Namibia. It was further introducted because it became a "culture" for Namibians to import articles which can be produced in Namibia by poverty-stricken, unemployed people in the rural areas.
For the last 14 years WAD has been training rural women across the country to produce linen shopping bags with the view -
To date, the project has proven to be a strong job creator for unemployed rural women and to date, over 300 000 linen shopping bags have already been produced by rural women at WAD Training Centres in the regions of Omusati, Kunene, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke and Hardap, and marketed in leading stores in the capital as well as in the regions and abroad, thus securing jobs for poverty-stricken women.
WAD provides the women with the necessary materials, who in turn, sew the bags and return them to Windhoek where different patterns are printed on the bags.
The markets include:
Women, when working together in projects at the WAD Training Centres in the regions, are presently earning more than a domestic worker in Windhoek, to ensure food and clothing for their families. They are furthermore, trained to establish Savings Clubs within the projects to ensure self-sustainability of the projects.
However, if Namibians are committed and sensitised to a greater extent to purchase the linen shopping bags to alleviate poverty and employment, many more women will be given the opportunity to benefit from the project.
It is the wish of the organisation that all shops in Namibia will co-operate and start to charge a minimal fee for plastic bags to enhance the sale of the linen shopping bags as a more permanent and durable shopping bag.
However, this could be a long educational process to sensitise Namibians of the importance to protect their environment; to secure jobs to the unemployed and to replace plastic shopping bags with linen shopping bags.
