THE WAD PAPER BRICK PROJECT
Environmentally Friendly Paper Bricks Project

Environmentally Friendly Paper Bricks Project
The environmentally friendly Paper Bricks Project entails the manufacturing of paper bricks to either replace or complement fire wood as fuel for domestic purposes. These bricks are made of soaked and compressed waste paper which is acquired from a local printing works at no charge.
The manufacturing of paper bricks to replace or to supplement firewood, has various benefits, especially for rural women who have the sole responsibility (in terms of cultural practices) to search for fire wood and in the process, have to walk for many kilometres in search of fire wood.
Apart from the many hours spent (in many instances a whole day or two), to search for fire wood, their time can now be more fruitfully utilised to engage in the production of paper bricks; or training to acquire various skills; or to participate in other income-generating projects.
Furthermore, a most important advantage of the manufacturing of the paper bricks is that it curbs deforestation to a great extent because it obviates the need to fell trees for fire wood, coupled with the fact that the bricks are extremely cost effective and environmentally friendly inasfar as air pollution is concerned.
To facilitate the manufacturing of paper bricks in the regions in which WAD is active, the organisation has purchased a number of paper brick machines which have been distributed to its various training centres in the regions.
Directions for use:
After having tested the bricks it is important to note that -
The production of paper bricks is income-generating. Paper bricks are produced at the WAD Training Centres and serve to sensitise project members who hail from various poverty-stricken communities, on a daily basis to produce paper bricks as a wise option to cook a meal for their families instead of chopping down trees and wasting valuable hours in searching for fire wood

The directions are straightforward and very simple. Newspapers are torn up in small pieces and soaked for 2 days in a bath tub of water. Thereafter, soaked newspaper pieces are put in the paper brick machine to squeese out excessive water. Thereafter, the brick is taken out to dry for a couple of days, depending on the weather.
• A quarter brick boils 1 litre of water within 15 minutes in a Tso-tso stove;
• Approximately 3 - 4 bricks can cook a meal in a traditional pot;
• 10 bricks can easily be used to cook a meal in a traditional pot for approximately 40 people;
• Paper bricks can be used successfully in a coal stove;
• Paper bricks can be used successfully under 3-legged pots or in fire places.
