On Thursday, 08 September 2005, during his response to parliamentary questions, the President of South Africa, President Thabo MBEKI, made a profound statement regarding minority groups, their initiatives and their participation in the country's development.
This statement followed from the Presidents referral to a project launched by the AHI (Afrikaanse Handels Instituut) to "demonstrate what is possible in dealing with the challenge of reconciliation and transformation as well as the huge challenges of development that still face us".
The President continued:
"Madam Speaker, the excellent efforts of the AHI are just one example. I am certain that there are many other similar initiatives undertaken by people from minority communities that help with the task of reconciliation and the development and transformation of our country. What we need to do is to find these initiatives and programmes, highlight them and ensure that they serve as examples to the rest of the South African people as to what can be done to take our country forward.
Clearly, we need partnerships with various sectors of the South African society, such as the media, so that together we take a conscious and deliberate decision to play an active role in promoting reconciliation and transformation in our country.
I would like to call on all our people to make the challenge of reconciliation and transformation our common challenge and that we all should, like the AHI and other organisations and individuals among the minority communities, assist one another so as to move our country forward."
The President quoted Mr. Jacob DE VILLIERS of the AHI who said: "We cannot do much about the past, but we can do many things about the future."
It is not often that a prophet is recognised in his/her own country!
Well done President Mbeki!
