AGRICULTURE IN AFRICA

Africa's agricultural sector need not be regarded as subsistence farming.

South Africa's Agricultural Sector is leading the way in demonstrating PPP - Process of Positive Participation - to address the skills shortages, evident in the agricultural sector.

Land Affairs and Agriculture Minister Lulama XINGWANA, here in South Africa, recently called on new land owners to form strategic partnerships with professional practitioners to enable the land to be developed productively. The South African Commission on Restitution of Land Rights maintains that new land owners often lack the expertise to work the land effectively and as a result production declines.

Just how do we go about addressing these skills shortages?

On Thursday, 24 August 2006, I will be chairing a one day symposium in Irene, Tshwane (Pretoria), South Africa at the the Lombar Events Centre at the Irene Campus of the Agricultural Research Council. The event, entitled - ATfA - Agricultural Technology for Africa, will present South African agricultural technology, products and services available to representatives of African Governments, aid & development organisations, businessmen, entrepreneurs and farmers throughout Africa and to convince them that South Africa should be the partner of choice for agricultural development initiatives/projects throughout Africa.

Walden BELLO, an executive director of Focus on the Global South and a Professor of Sociology at the University of the Philippines writes: "The collapse of the Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organization in Geneva is one of the best things to happen to the developing world in a long while"

Select - Collapse of the DOHA negotiations

A bold statement, but somehow I have to agree, Africa will have to wake up to the reality of having to do it on her own. PPP - Process of Positive Participation - will make all the difference. It is initiatives like this symposium that provide for unity in Africa - We, the Foundation for the Development of Africa, have always proclaimed "Participation Builds Unity" - see our FDA Logo.

Dear Mr Peter,
Agriculture in Africa is a very broud and productive topic that to me, can escalate the development of Africa to the peak. However, it will not be easy to propagate this message very well to those of us who need it much because: very few Africans are computer literates, "Enemies of Africa Growth" will not make it easy for you to organise any of such seminars for the message and may be,some of us Africans will not understand it for now especially in this era of some graduates seeking for "greener pastures" in desert lands and white coller jobs with "black colours".
I will be among many who will appreciate it if other well-meaning Africans could establish such organisations as yours in their respective nations.
Please, invite partners to help you take up this AGRICULTURE IN AFRICA challenge.
Once again, I always appreciate your struggle.
May you have the courage, health and goodwill of doing the immeasurable work you are doing!
Best wishes.
