FDA - FIGHTING CORRUPTION
I have just read, with interest, an article that appeared in the Inter Press News Service on 21 June 2006, regarding a Juan Carlos Robinson (49) a key PCC (Cuban Communist Party) Central Committee member who was tried on charges of influence peddling resulting in a 12-year prison sentence.

"Influence peddling" - a 'political correct' phrase for "accepting bribes"

In November 2005 President Fidel CASTRO publicly warned of the possibility that the system (The Government) could "self-destruct" should the "battle against corruption" and other vices, such as theft, diversion of funds and abuse of power in state-owned corporations not be curtailed. "Either we defeat the problem, or we die," he warned then.

All too often are corrupt officials in Africa only suspended from their 'profiled' positions - with full pay. Once charged, prosecuted, put on trial and found guilty, the "influence peddling" perpetrators (still receiving full pay and benefits) appeal the court outcome thus remaining 'suspended' and then await the appeal trial that may take years to conclude.

Corruption is impacting profoundly on Africa!

Transparency International's Corruption index rated or ranked South Africa 4.8 out of a score of 10 - 10 being the perfect corruption free ultimate score.

In 2005 the President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, during his key address at the opening of the Second National Anti-Corruption Summit in Tshwane (Pretoria) South Africa quoted the Foreword to the Report by the Minister for the Public Service and Administration and the Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, who said that:

"It is especially important that Government's partnerships with business and civil society are nurtured, as it would be impossible for Government alone to deal with corruption. In these partnerships, each partner must be held accountable for its own corruption, but each should also exercise both a critical role and seek assistance and co-operation from the other partners."

We all need to heed corruption - slipping a security guard a small 'financial reward' for allowing you access to a restricted parking area or 'leaving' a twenty dollar' bill in your passport when clearing customs is as corrupt as "influence peddling" officials!

I am chairing a conference on fighting corruption and safeguarding integrity to be held here in South Africa - see:
