LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
All too often do we regard local economic development as a government thing and/or something that has to come from across our borders and/or something that should originate from the NEPAD Secretariat.
All too often does the solution to sustainable local economic development lie right on our doorstep, waiting for the right person to identify the need and implement the action!
This action could include a host of services that may capacitate local government, much needed throughout Africa, implemented through a PPP (Private Public Partnership) as well as inspire the true value of what NEPAD is all about forming new partnerships that will lead to Africas development.
I am chairing and presenting at a conference that will address all the issues around the implementation and monitoring of Local Economic Development Programs (LEDP)
This conference, organized by Unicapital Consult, will take place on 29 and 30 August 2007, while a Focused Workshop will be available on 31 August. The venue for this informative event is the Intercontinental Sandton Sun and Towers, here in Sandton, South Africa.
A host of interesting topics will be addressed and discussed including:
Challenges facing urban and local economic development and investment Globalization and urban development: the changing context of urban planning in Sub-Saharan Africa
Using Local Economic Development (LED) as the driving force for development in Africa
Appropriate urban and rural socio-economic development strategies

COMMENTS RECEIVED
14 August 2007
Hi Peter,
I agreed hundred percent with you that this is one subject that is never given enough attention our Governments and ourselves in the private sector.
If governments embark on it, it is usually their own programme driven by officials and the donors who usually spend funds in infrastructure without
linking that to maintenance requirements in the short or long future.
The way it has been treated has been like local growth and development will automatically take off when such infrastructure has been put in place.
In short, it is never based on consensus and planned approach by all-public and private sectors.
I feel this conference could not have come at the most appropriate time.
I am only sad that I cannot come because of prior engagements.
I will looking forward to read the papers that will be presented at the conference for my own education and enlightment.
I wish you success and I am sure you will make it what it should be.
Best regards.
