The AFRICA TRADE CENTRE, through it's Corporate Social Investment arm, THE FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA, have been running a number of worthwhile 'campaigns' that have (and no doubt will) impact profoundly on our continent Africa and her sustainable development.

I SUPPORT AFRICA
The objective of this "I SUPPORT AFRICA" campaign is to mobilize the world to 'take hands' in support of Africa and her people!

This campaign therefore endeavors to promote opportunities in Africa and to acknowledge those who share our vision in Africa's sustainable development process.

Most importantly this campaign allows the "you and I" of this world to participate in Africa's development!

STANDARDISATION WHEN LISTING TELEPHONE NUMBERS
For some time now we have been pleading with our contacts to endeavor to standardize the format in which telephone numbers are used on business cards, stationery and even on the internet and websites:

This is a typical way a telephone number in Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa should be listed:

00 27 (0)11 793 4409 (our old telephone number)

00 = The new International Dialing Code
27 = This code designates the country - South Africa
(0) = This digit is only required when dialing the number locally e.g. in South Africa - therefore listed in brackets
11 = This is the code for a particular region or area - Johannesburg
793 = This is the code that further defines the region or area e.g. Randburg
4409 = The dedicated number.

A number in London, Great Briton would be listed as follow:

00 44 (0)207 427 2377

00 = The International Code '00'
44 = This code designates the country - Britain
(0) = This digit is only required when dialing the number locally e.g. in Britain - therefore listed in brackets
207 = This is the code for particular region or area e.g London
427 = This is the code that further defines the region or area
2377 = This is their code or number.

A mobile number (South Africa) would be written as follows:
00 27 (0)84 333 7777

WRITING OF NAMES
In Africa we are faced with a very peculiar situation, namely how to identify the common name (first name) from the surname or family name.

What name is the common or first name or what name is the family name or surname?

To overcome this problem it is essential we write the family name in capital letters.

In a number of African countries it is regarded as an offence to address anyone by their common name unless they have given you permission to do so - this ignorance may just result in a relationship going sour and the loss of potential business.
