CONTINENTAL BUSINESS CHAMBER TO BE LAUNCHED IN AFRICA
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Business Forum which was formed last year will assist in launching a continent-wide African Chambers of Commerce and Industries.
The launching is part of intensive projects to launch Africa as an economic power house, with Africans playing the dominant role.
The new continental chamber will be launched at the World Economic Forum in Cape Town, scheduled for June 1-3, 2005.
An interim committee had been elected to draw up a constitution. The continental chamber will interact with the Africa Union (AU) and will work closely with NEPAD to drive NEPAD projects.
One of the priorities of the chamber would be to boost domestic airline capacity in Africa, especially the promotion of flights linking countries and cities.
It has not yet been decided where the headquarters of the proposed African Chambers of Commerce will be.
In preparing the way for the establishment of the continental chamber, ASCCI (Association of SADC Chambers of Commerce & Industries) play a key role. ASCCI is a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Business Forum established last year.
The secretariat of ASCCI had moved from Mauritius, to Malawi and is now based in South Africa. The Chambers of Commerce and Industry South Africa (Chamsa) assist in overcoming some of ASSCI’s initial problems that was due to a lack of resources.
