NEPAD has made the following plea to Africa:

"The African peoples must take up the challenge of mobilising in support of the implementation of this initiative (NEPAD) by setting up, at all levels, structures for organisation, mobilisation and action!"

In February 2002 the FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA approached NEPAD to find ways of cooperation, we were advised by NEPAD Secretariat not to "reinvent the wheel" and to “take hands” with the ABR – African Business Roundtable.

We could not afford the then US$ 5,000.00 registration and annual fee required by the ABR – African Business Roundtable – nor could any of our then members/partners afford this fee!

It became very evident - the only way to interact with NEPAD Secretariat (from a business perspective) was one or all of the following:

*** Nepotism or “nepadtism” - a family member working in NEPAD
*** Access via political contacts - connected to NEPAD
*** Buy your way in - make a substantial donation to NEPAD

NEPAD have ‘endorsed’ three “business representatives” as the only organisations “allowed” to interact with NEPAD - should you be interested in participating in Africa’s business development within the framework of the NEPAD initiative you need to “join” one or all of the following:

*** ABR – African Business Roundtable (TUKUR)
*** NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (Continental) NIGERIA (TUKUR)
*** NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (COUNCIL) SOUTH AFRICA (KHOZA)

ABR – African Business Roundtable (TUKUR)
Established in 1990 the ABR promised to be the only continent wide business association serving Africa Business. Currently (December 2003) chaired by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (Nigeria) the ABR had ‘lost’ (as at end November 2003) a substantial number of its members due to non-delivery. The organisation is constantly restructuring and has had to appoint no less than three Permanent Secretaries in the last year.

The ABR website was ‘dormant’ for the last 9 months and is currently (as at 12 December 2003) not available.

The poor attendance of members at the recent (9 December 2003) ABR - AGM held in Sandton, South Africa (ABR Head Office is in Sandton) places a large question mark on the ability of the ABR to represent Africa Business.

NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (Continental) NIGERIA (TUKUR)
This “process” is spearheaded by the ABR and chaired by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, from Nigeria.

The NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP was ‘established’ in April 2002 and has yet (as at 12 December 2003) to deliver any structure, format or proposal. This "process" has only been “talking the talk” for 21 months now. See the ABR (African Business Roundtable – Tukur) press statement:

****NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (TUKUR) PRESS RELEASE****

To "access" this “group” you need to join the ABR - African Business Roundtable

The NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (TUKUR) boasts with 12 “so-called” NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP ASSOCIATES. As at 12 December 2003 only two of these ‘associates’ make mention of the NEPAD initiative – see:

****NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP - (TUKUR)****

NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (COUNCIL) SOUTH AFRICA (KHOZA)
This “process” is spearheaded by Reuel Khoza, from South Africa.

The NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (COUNCIL) SOUTH AFRICA was ‘established’ in June 2002 at the World Economic Forum held in Durban South Africa. Some 180 businesses (Big Business) pledged support to this “process”

Reuel Khoza, presented this “process” to the delegates of the African Union Business Summit, in June 2002, on the last day and during the last session of this all-important summit.

No option is available (as at 12 December 2003) to ''join' this group – however it has been announced (09 December 2003) that a Section 21 Company (Not for Profit) will be established to accommodate this “process”

Participation to “Business Covenants and Declaration on Business in Africa” and the “Business Endorsement of NEPAD” is available.

This NEPAD BUSINESS GROUP (COUNCIL) SOUTH AFRICA “process” seems to be somewhat proactive – yet exclusive – see:

..........AND NOW

NEPAD BUSINESS FOUNDATION (KHOZA)
This initiative is also "spearheaded" by Reuel Khoza, from South Africa.
