PRESS RELEASE
From: NEPAD KENYA SECRETARIAT
This office has read with dismay, adverse reports in the local press attributed to one Ms Grace Akumu, former chairperson of the National Governing Council of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) regarding the operations of NEPAD Kenya Secretariat and its relationship with the National Governing Council of APRM.
We wish to respond as follows:
One: This office has not been closed or barricaded by any security agents at any one time either today, yesterday or the day before.
Two: The African Peer Review Funds are managed and disbursed by UNDP as per budget lines prepared by NEPAD Kenya Secretariat, the National Governing council, the Ministry of Planning & National Development and Donor Contributors to the Basket Fund.
Three: If there is any mismanagement, misappropriation or misallocation of the APRM funds, the UNDP Nairobi office is best placed to comment on it.
Four: It is incorrect and misleading to insinuate that the Hon. Minister for Planning and National Development or any other government official for that matter has attempted to micromanage, control or have undue influence on the APRM process or its funds
Five: It is true the government degazetted three members of the National Governing Council i.e. Mrs. Grace Akumu, Amb. Orie Rogo Manduli and Ms. Shanisa Khasiani. The reasons for degazetting them will be made clear by the government in due course
Six: We hereby confirm that the operations of NEPAD Kenya Secretariat cannot be paralyzed by the government’s degazettement of just three council members out of a total thirty three (33).
Seven: The government has subsequently appointed Rev. Jephthah Gathaka Executive Director of The Ecumenical Centre for Justice & Peace and a long serving member of the National Governing Council of the APRM as acting Chairman until a new chairman is elected at the next full council meeting.
Signed:
Dr. Grace Ongile
